These fasting food recipes are prepared for vrat, but not limited to it, and hence can be prepared for any occasion or even for lunch boxes.

Vrat Ka Khana Recipe | Vrat Ka Nashta | Upvas Ka Khana | Navratri Ka Khana with step-by-step photo and video recipe. There are many types of fasting food recipes in Indian cuisine prepared for particular festivals and religious occasions. However, sabudana or sago pearl is one such universal ingredient used to make khichdi or vada for vrat or fasting. However, it can also be used to make other types of vrat ka khana recipes with idli, dosa, and appe being one such recipe.

We generally believe that vrat ka khana is limited to religious or festival-specific fasting food. However, it is not just limited to it. As matter of fact, you may practice these foods for a healthy vegetarian lifestyle. Also, it helps to maintain the body temperature and hence helps to focus more on spiritual and inner peace. In addition, the ingredients used for fasting are considered nutrient and healthy and hence used as fasting recipes. Typically during fasting, 1 or 2 meals are skipped and hence body needs sufficient and balanced nutrients. The typical ingredients prohibited during fasting are lentils, rice, grains, and some aromatic spices. This does not mean those ingredients are less healthy, but just that it is not suitable for fasting purpose. Vrat Ka Nashta Furthermore, some more related and additional tips, suggestions, and variants to the vrat ka nashta. Firstly, out of the 3 recipes I have posted in this video, my personal favorite is appe as it is more realistic than the traditional recipe. Note that sabudana is not the preferred ingredient for idli and dosa and hence it may not carry the same shape and taste. Secondly, while preparing any fasting recipes, I would strongly recommend using fresh and green ingredients. Avoid using processed ingredients as it is not ideal to prepare fasting recipes using them. Lastly, the spices used for any fasting recipes are limited and hence use them smartly and wisely. The basic spices used are ginger, cumin, and coriander.

Fasting food or vrat ka khana is a type of food which are generally served or prepared during the religious or festival seasons as compared to the day-to-day meal. These are typically prepared with limited and chosen ingredients with rice, lentil, and grains strictly prohibited. Yet there are certain regular ingredients like potato, peanuts, and millet that can be used which are known for health benefits. Due to the nature of the fasting, only one or 2 meals are maximum allowed during the fasting, and hence using healthy and nutrient ingredients really helps to focus on the spiritual side of fasting.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 cup sabudana
  • ½ cup peanut
  • ¼ cup rajgira atta
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 2 chilli, finely chopped
  • 2 tbsp coriander, chopped
  • 2 tbsp coconut, grated
  • 1 potato, boiled & mashed
  • ¾ cup curd
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup water
  • oil, for roasting

Instructions
 

  • firstly, in a pan take 1 cup sabudana and ½ cup peanut.
  • dry roast on medium flame until the peanut turns crunchy.
  • cool completely, and grind to a fine powder.
  • transfer the sabudana peanut powder to a large bowl.
  • add ¼ cup rajgira atta, 1 tsp cumin, 2 chilli, 2 tbsp coriander, and 2 tbsp coconut.
  • also add 1 potato, ¾ cup curd, and 1 tsp salt.
  • adding 1 cup water and mixing well forming a batter.
  • cover and rest for 10 minutes or until the sabudana is soaked well.
  • you can use the batter to make appe.
  • or you can steam in idli plate for 10 minutes.
  • you can also make chilla by roasting in pan.
  • finally, enjoy vrat ka nashta with chutney.

  • Firstly, make sure to cook on medium flame, or else the batter will not get cooked from the inside.
  • Also, you can add grated carrots, or any vegetables to make it nutritious.
  • Additionally, use rock salt (sendha namak) instead of regular salt as it is not allowed during fasting.
  • Finally, Vrat Ka Khana Recipe tastes great when prepared slightly spicy.
