Tomato Fish Masala

A quick and simple Kerala style fish curry made with tomatoes.

Tomato Fish Masala

Ingredients

  • 1/2 kg King fish

For Marination

  • 1 tsp Chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp Pepper powder
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
  • Salt

For Masala

  • 2 medium Onion (chopped)
  • 2 chopped Tomato
  • 3 Green chili
  • 1.5 tbsp Ginger (chopped)
  • 1.5 tbsp Garlic (chopped)
  • 1 tbsp Coriander powder
  • 1.5 tbsp Kashmiri chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp Garam masala
  • 2 cups Water
  • 4-5 tbsp Coconut oil
  • Curry leaves
  • Salt

Instructions

  • Marinate the cleaned fish pieces with ingredients listed under “for marination” and keep aside for half an hour. Heat 4 tbsp oil in a pan and fry the marinated fish pieces.
  • Add chopped onion, ginger & garlic,curry leaves and green chili to the remaining oil and saute till it is done. Add all masala powders and stir for a minute. Once the masala powders are fried well, add tomato pieces and saute till the oil starts appearing.
  • Add 2 cups of water & salt. Let it boil. Once it starts boiling add fried fish pieces and cook in low flame for about 7 – 10 minutes or until the fish pieces are covered in the gravy. Serve hot with rice.

  3. hi maria.your fishmasala is wat we call fishmoalgulittathu.only difference here the fish is fried.and i must confess marias fried taste somuch better.but how u get the yellow color (i luv yellow color)wen u add so much chilly powder.i aasume it a camera trick for the site.r u publishing any book of receipes?

      I’ve heard about meen mulakittathu, but never knew its recipe…btw, thanks for trying this. Happy to hear that you liked it :)

      Regarding the color, there is no camera trick :) I think this is more of reddish colour and may be the light gives it a yellowish tint.

      Presently I dont have any plans to publish a book. Am just doing this as a hobby :)
